Bangor Medicine: how it selects
The North Wales Medical School ranks everyone who meets its academic requirements on the UCAT total and interviews from the top until its slots are filled. There is no cut-off, the SJT band is not used, and only applicants with permanent UK residency can apply. It has 90 places for 2027 entry and has released no admissions statistics, so this page sets out its rules. Offer AAA with Biology, MMI.
Offers, contextual offers and resits
A-level offer, 2027 entry
AAA
Biology, plus one of Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Maths, Further Maths or Statistics, both at A
Resits
Does not accept resits
Bangor does not accept Level 3 (A-level) resits, though exams taken after centre-assessed grades do not count as resits. GCSE resits are accepted if completed within 12 months of the first sitting and before you apply (English or Welsh Language has no time limit); one resit per qualification.
From Bangor (North Wales Medical School)’s own admissions pages for 2027 entry, checked 1 October 2026. Where a box says not stated, the school’s pages do not mention it.

| Entry year | Places |
|---|---|
| 2025 | 70 |

| 2028 | 100 |
| 2029 | 110 |
A growing intake with no published scores means last year’s interviewees are no guide to this year’s. With a ranking from the top, your UCAT total is what matters most once you meet the academic requirements.
Who can get the AAB contextual offer
Bangor lists these; the offer keeps the compulsory sciences at A, and no offer is based on contextual data alone.
- A low-participation postcode (POLAR4), including Communities First areas in Wales
- Free school meals
- Estranged from your parents
- A parent or carer in the UK armed forces, or having served yourself
- Caring responsibilities
- A physical or mental health condition, long-term illness or learning difference
- Time spent in care
- First in your family to go to university
- A Welsh Language GCSE (Bangor's FAQs say first or second language)
- A-levels
- AAA: Biology, plus one of Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Maths, Further Maths or Statistics, both at A. Home applicants only: you must have permanent UK residency when you apply. Predicted grades must meet the offer. BTEC and Access qualifications are not accepted.
- GCSEs
- English Language or Welsh Language, Maths and Double Science (or Biology and Chemistry) at 6, plus four other GCSEs at 6. Welsh Language counts in place of English.
- UCAT
- No cut-off: applicants who meet the academic requirements are ranked on the UCAT total and the highest are interviewed until the slots are filled. The SJT is not used at present. 90 places for 2027 entry, rising by 10 a year.
- SJT band
- The SJT band is not considered at present, though Bangor says that may change; the ranking is the UCAT total.
- Personal statement
- Read as part of the application. Read: it has to show you understand the UK healthcare system and what medical training involves. Bangor does not say it is scored.
- Interview
- MMI.
- Contextual applicants
- A contextual offer of AAB, with the compulsory sciences at A, for applicants from low-participation postcodes (POLAR4, or Communities First areas in Wales), applicants with UCAS indicators such as free school meals, time in care, estrangement, caring responsibilities, an armed forces family or being first in the family at university, and Welsh speakers with a Welsh Language GCSE.
- Resits
- Does not accept resits. Bangor does not accept Level 3 (A-level) resits, though exams taken after centre-assessed grades do not count as resits. GCSE resits are accepted if completed within 12 months of the first sitting and before you apply (English or Welsh Language has no time limit); one resit per qualification.
