Brighton and Sussex Medicine: the admissions numbers

Six years of applications, interviews, offers and enrolments by category, and the UCAT thresholds since BSMS moved from the BMAT to the UCAT for 2025 entry. For 2026 entry the Home non-contextual line was 1,990, every contextual applicant who met the requirements was interviewed, and 631 of 755 Home interviewees got an offer. Offer AAA, MMI.

Read this before you use any number on the page

Ignore the Band 4. BSMS’s figures show that for 2025 entry the lowest SJT band of anyone interviewed was Band 4. That was the first UCAT year and it will not happen again: for 2027 entry BSMS ranks only applicants with SJT Band 1, 2 or 3, so a Band 4 is rejected before the ranking. Plan on Bands 1 to 3.
2025 entry is on the old UCAT scale out of 3,600; 2026 entry is on the current scale out of 2,700. Do not compare a 2025 figure with a 2026 one.
Two kinds of UCAT figure sit side by side. The threshold is where the UCAT ranking stopped for each group (1,990 for Home non-contextual applicants for 2026 entry). The lowest invited (1,560 Home, 1,340 contextual) is lower because Sussex sixth-formers and care leavers are interviewed without being ranked. The threshold is the number that matters for a standard applicant.
“CD” in BSMS’s figures is contextual data: Home applicants who met its adjusted-offer criteria. They are ranked in their own pool with about 30% of interviews reserved for them, and for 2026 entry every one who met the requirements was invited.
The 2026 offer rate (83%) is far above earlier years (52% to 61%) and the 2026 row is the cycle in progress at the time of the response; enrolments were not yet counted.

How BSMS selects, 2027 entry

SJT Band 1 to 3, then a UCAT ranking

Applicants with SJT Band 1, 2 or 3 are ranked by UCAT total and the top are invited to interview. Contextual applicants are ranked separately, and BSMS aims to reserve 30% of interviews for them. For 2027 entry a Situational Judgement Test Band 4 is not considered: only Bands 1 to 3 enter the ranking.

Contextual applicants: their own pool and an AAB offer

Home applicants meeting at least one criterion in three of the sections (geographical: POLAR4 or TUNDRA quintile 1 or 2, or the most deprived 20% by IMD; educational: an 11–16 state school below the national Attainment 8 average, or no parent with a UK degree; household: means-tested benefits, free school meals or the UCAT bursary; individual: an EHCP, PIP, or young-carer status) get the adjusted AAB offer and are ranked in their own pool. Care leavers of three months or more are interviewed automatically if the academic criteria are met.

Guaranteed interview for Sussex sixth-formers

Applicants currently at a sixth form or college in Sussex are guaranteed an interview if they meet the GCSE requirements, are on track for the standard or adjusted offer, sat the UCAT that year and have SJT Band 1 to 3.

Entry requirements

AAA including Biology or Chemistry and one further subject from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics; the third subject is free (not General Studies or Critical Thinking). Contextual applicants: AAB with the same subjects. The EPQ is welcomed but not part of any offer. GCSEs: Only GCSE English (Language or Literature) and Mathematics are considered, at grade 6 or above (grade 5 for contextual applicants). No other GCSEs are looked at and no number is required.

BSMS used the BMAT until 2024 entry, so there is nothing earlier. 2025 is out of 3,600; 2026 is out of 2,700.

For 2026 entry the Home non-contextual line was 1,990, and at that score the SJT band decided who got in (Band 1). The average interviewee had 2,080, about 90 above the line. In 2025 the gap was similar: a threshold of 2,560 and an average of 2,720 on the old scale. Contextual applicants had a lower line in 2025 (2,420) and no line at all in 2026.

Interviews have grown from 506 to 755 Home while applications fell, so the Home interview rate went from 30% to 54%. BSMS’s own post-interview rate ran at about half (52% to 61%) until 2026, when it was 83%: 631 of 755 Home interviewees got an offer for 197 places. Contextual applicants are about a fifth of Home applicants and a fifth to a third of Home offers.
