Barts and The London Medicine: the admissions numbers

Queen Mary adds the UCAS tariff for your predicted A levels to your UCAT total and ranks the sum, after a first screen that rejects anyone below the fourth UCAT decile or with SJT Band 4. It publishes six cycles of applications and interviews with the lowest tariff and UCAT of school leavers interviewed. In the 2023 cycle 1,070 of 2,017 Home applicants were interviewed and 613 got an offer for 308 places, with a Home UCAT line of 2,720 out of 3,600. Offer A*AA, Panel, about 20 to 30 minutes.

Read this before you use any number on the page

Every UCAT figure is on the old scale out of 3,600; the 2023 cycle was 2023 entry. The current test is out of 2,700 and nothing here converts to it. Queen Mary’s only stated line on the current test is the fourth national decile as a minimum.
Because the tariff and the UCAT are added, there is no single UCAT cut-off before 2023: a low UCAT with a high tariff and a high UCAT with a low tariff both reached interview, which is why Queen Mary gives example pairs. “Lowest UCAT interviewed” is the score of the weakest-UCAT applicant who got in on a strong tariff.
The tariff points (A*AA = 152, A*A*A = 160, A*A*A* = 168) mean higher predictions add to the ranking score, yet Queen Mary’s FOI answer says predictions above A*AA give no advantage. Both are reproduced; the arithmetic of the ranking favours the higher tariff.
Offers and places were given for the 2023 cycle only. Overseas figures for 2018 were not split from Home.

How Barts selects

First screen: fourth decile and SJT Band 1 to 3

Every applicant must meet the minimum academic requirements, sit the UCAT in the year of application, score in the fourth decile or above, and have SJT Band 1 to 3. Below the fourth decile, or with Band 4, the application is rejected. Being above the fourth decile guarantees nothing.

Then tariff plus UCAT, ranked

The UCAS tariff for predicted or achieved A levels is added to the UCAT total and applicants are ranked on the sum against everyone else applying that year; Home and overseas applicants are ranked separately. Queen Mary describes this as a 50/50 weighting. GCSEs are not scored and no data is held on them.

Higher predictions

Queen Mary says predictions above A*AA give no advantage at interview selection or offer, although its tariff table assigns A*A*A and A*A*A* more points than A*AA. Contextual applicants can be scored on an AAA prediction (144 tariff points); everyone else needs at least A*AA (152).

After interview

The SJT band is added to the interview score: Band 1 adds 2 points, Band 2 adds 1, Band 3 adds nothing. Offers may also consider the tariff and UCAT.

The pairs show the exchange rate: in 2020 a tariff of 166 (about A*AA with a fourth subject) needed a UCAT of 3,050, while a tariff of 260 got in with 2,410. Home interviews have held at about 1,000 a year since 2020 while applications moved between 1,400 and 2,100, so the interview rate has swung from 71% to 48% with the cohort.
