Aston Medicine: the admissions numbers

Aston ranks every applicant on an academic score out of 24 (six GCSEs) plus a UCAT score out of 12, and publishes the range of both for 2025 entry at every stage. The message is stark: Home interviewees averaged 23.87 of 24 on academics and nobody below 22 was interviewed. Offer A*AA, MMI.

Read this before you use any number on the page

The academic score decides. Home interviewees for 2025 entry averaged 23.87 of 24 and none scored under 22. An average that close to 24 means nearly every interviewee had 8s or 9s in all six scored GCSEs; the lowest, 22, is four 8s or 9s with two 7s (or one 6). Applicants below that are very unlikely to be interviewed, and a high UCAT does not make up for it.
Every UCAT figure is on the old scale out of 3,600; 2025 entry was the last cycle on it. Aston’s UCAT points mapping is also stated for that scale, and how it maps the current test out of 2,700 is not published, so the score-out-of-36 arithmetic here is illustrative.
Aston says the 2025 figures illustrate typical scores and are not a guarantee or predictor for future entry. Home, widening participation and international applicants are ranked separately.
Aston is unusual in accepting all four SJT bands and not using the band in its ranking.

How Aston selects

Ranked on achieved academics plus UCAT

After the UCAS deadline every applicant is ranked on achieved qualifications (normally GCSEs) plus UCAT total, with Home, Widening Participation and International applicants ranked separately. The top are invited to MMIs, then re-ranked with the MMI score added, and the top of that list get offers.

No UCAT cut-off; all SJT bands accepted

No cut-off, and all four SJT bands are accepted; the SJT band plays no part in the ranking. International applicants are ranked for interview on UCAT total alone.

Predicted A levels are not scored

Predicted A levels are not scored. Applicants who already hold A levels score them (A* or A = 4 each, up to 12) with GCSEs scored out of 12 (9/8/7 = 2, 6 = 1) for the same 24 maximum.

Entry requirements

A*AA with Chemistry and Biology compulsory (including the practical elements) and the A* in one of them; any third subject except General Studies or Critical Thinking. With more than three A levels, Chemistry, Biology and the next best grade count. GCSEs: At least six GCSEs at grade 6 or above including English Language, Mathematics, and Chemistry and Biology or Double Science. That is the minimum; the ranking favours high grades.

Aston divides the possible range of UCAT totals from 1,200 to 3,600 into equal steps with points in 0.5 gradations. Read as 0 at 1,200 rising by 0.5 for every 100, so 2,400 is 6 and 3,600 is 12; that reading is MedOffr’s, and the mapping for the current test is not published.

Applicants averaged 22.28 on academics and interviewees 23.87: the cut is almost entirely on GCSEs. Once interviewed, neither score moves: offer holders and enrolled students have the same averages as interviewees, so the MMI decides from there.

What score out of 36 was needed

Putting Aston’s 2025 figures through its own scheme on MedOffr’s reading of the UCAT points: the average Home interviewee was about 31.4 of 36 (23.87 academic + 7.5 UCAT) and the lowest around 28.0 (22 + 6.0). The table shows the academic points each GCSE profile earns and the UCAT that would lift it to the interviewee average.

A high UCAT does not compensate. Each GCSE grade step is worth a point but each 100 UCAT marks only half a point, so two 7s instead of 8s cost as much as 400 UCAT marks. Nobody with an academic score under 22 was interviewed for 2025 entry, whatever their UCAT, and 22 is already two 7s among the six. With three 7s, matching the average interviewee would take about 3,300 of 3,600; with six 7s (18 points) even a perfect UCAT gives 30, and no one that low on academics got in the room. Treat Aston as a choice for applicants with almost all 8s and 9s in the six scored subjects; otherwise the chances are slim, whatever the UCAT.
