Edinburgh Medicine: the admissions numbers
Five years of rest-of-UK applications, interviews, UCAT scores and offers released under Freedom of Information, the UCAT minimum Edinburgh publishes in advance (1,850 for 2027 entry), and how the final ranking is built: academics 25%, UCAT decile 17.5%, SJT band 7.5%, Assessment Day 50%. In 2024/25, 237 of 521 rest-of-UK applicants were interviewed and 160 got an offer for 79 places. Offer AAA, Assessment Day: three scored stations.

How Edinburgh selects
A published UCAT minimum: 1,850 for 2027 entry
Unusually, Edinburgh states its cut-off in advance in the applicant booklet. Applicants must meet or exceed it to be considered further. Above it, the score is ranked, not gated: the cohort is divided into deciles and each decile gets a score.
SJT Band 4 is processed as unsuccessful
The SJT band is scored separately and carries 7.5% of the final ranking. A Band 4 ends the application. The FOI adds that applicants with a competitive UCAT and Band 1 or 2 are more likely to be invited.
Two selectors score every application
Each application is assessed and scored independently by two selectors on academic results, UCAT decile and SJT band. The top scorers are invited to an Assessment Day. Once all scores are received Edinburgh ranks them, divides the cohort into deciles and allocates a score to each decile; the SJT band is scored separately and added. Subtest scores may be looked at again to separate tied applicants when places run short.
The Assessment Day is half the final score
Three stations, each scored independently by one selector; ordinarily a half-day in person at Edinburgh Medical School, likely virtual for applicants outside the UK and Ireland.
The final ranking after the Assessment Day
The booklet gives the UCAT weight as 17.5%; the FOI letter says 17.05%. Only 17.5% makes the four parts sum to 100, so the letter’s figure is taken to be a slip. Academic qualifications are weighted as a whole: Edinburgh does not apply separate weights to GCSEs and A levels. Offers go to the highest-ranked applicants within each fee category.
Personal statement
Not formally assessed. It may guide the admissions team when shortlisting for Assessment Days and is essential preparation for the day itself.
Fee status and the cut-off
The cut-off score for all non-contextual applicants is the same; there are no separate cut-offs by fee status. Places are set by the Scottish Government for each fee status, and conversion data decides how many to invite from each.

Applications by year
Rest-of-UK applications fell from 1,388 in 2021/22 to 521 in 2024/25 while places for the group rose from 59 to 79, so the interview rate climbed from 15% to 45% and offers per interview from 78% to 68%. The average UCAT of those interviewed rose every year but one, to 3,017 out of 3,600 (roughly the top fifth of the old test), and contextual applicants were interviewed from several hundred points lower than non-contextual ones each year.
Entry requirements for 2027 entry
A levels
AAA in one sitting, including Chemistry and one of Biology/Human Biology, Mathematics or Physics at A. Only one of Mathematics or Further Mathematics, and one of Biology or Human Biology, is counted. Best three A levels are scored, including the two required subjects.
GCSEs
Grade 7/A or above in Chemistry, Biology, English and Mathematics. Best eight grades are scored, including the required subjects. Double Award combined science at AA/77 may replace the science GCSEs.
Scottish qualifications
Highers AAAAB by the end of S5 including Chemistry and two from Biology/Human Biology, Mathematics/Applications of Mathematics or Physics; two Advanced Highers at BB in S6. National 5s at B or above in Chemistry, Biology, English and Mathematics.
International Baccalaureate
38 points including TOK and EE, with 666 at Higher Level including Chemistry and at least one other science.
No resits
All grades must be achieved at the first attempt; no resits are permitted.
Widening access
Applicants eligible under the University's Widening Access Offer policy (including LEAPS and Reach) are given extra consideration and can be considered against the minimum rather than the standard entry requirements.
Tuition fees, per year
The Edinburgh MBChB is six years, including an intercalated year. Fees by fee status as published on Edinburgh’s fees page in September 2026; the international rate applies to EU students starting from August 2021.
