Manchester is the biggest medical school in the country, so it interviews and admits more people than anywhere else: 1,667 Home applicants were shortlisted for 2026 entry and 985 got an offer. How Manchester builds its shortlist
First the GCSE minimums, then a UCAT ranking
Shortlisting is primarily UCAT and GCSEs, in that order of operation: Manchester checks that the GCSE requirements below are met, then ranks everyone who passes by UCAT score and shortlists from the top. GCSEs are a gate, not a score.
2,060 was the line for 2026 entry; aim above 2,100
The 2026-entry threshold was 2,060 for Home applicants, 2,250 for overseas and 1,960 for WP+. A score of 2,100 or more gives headroom if the line rises, which it does most years.
SJT Bands 3 and 4 are rejected
Stricter than most schools, which reject Band 4 only. A Band 3 ends the application at Manchester whatever the cognitive score.
Predicted grades are not used
Manchester does not consider predicted grades when shortlisting for interview or when deciding offers. An AAA prediction is not behind A*A*A*; the offer is AAA and that is what you have to achieve.
The GCSE requirement, in Manchester’s words
At least seven GCSEs at grade 7 (A) or above.
A broad general education including GCSE/IGCSE English Language, Mathematics and at least two science subjects at a minimum of grade 6 (B). English Literature is not accepted in place of English Language. Dual Award Science or Core and Additional Science needs at least 66 (BB).
Applicants confirmed as WP+ or WP++ through the University's contextual data eligibility tool need six GCSEs at grade 7 (A) or above.

The shape is unusual: Manchester shortlists most Home applicants who clear the threshold and then makes offers to well over half of them, so the UCAT line is the real gate and the interview is the second cut. The 2022 dip (375 Home offers) is the outlier; every other year sits between 733 and 985.

How the standard threshold moved, 2019 to 2025 entry
Measured from 2,677, the seven-year average, on the old scale out of 3,600. 2026 entry is on the new scale and cannot share this axis, so it is in the table below. Hover or tab to a year.
The line climbed 150 points between 2019 and 2023 and then settled. Manchester publishes the threshold each year after applications close; it is the clearest year-on-year series any school has released.

The 2021 shortlisted mean sits marginally below the applicant mean in Manchester’s table; it is reproduced as published. The 2026 shortlist averaged 2,193 against a threshold of 2,060: most shortlisted applicants sat well above the line, which is why 2,100+ is the safer target.
