Brunel Medicine: the interview

A multiple mini interview (recorded online MMI, six stations, about 40 minutes). Below: the numbers, what the interview looks for, your personal statement and SJT band, and questions to practise.

How it runs

Format
Multiple mini interview (MMI) · Recorded online MMI, six stations, about 40 minutes
When
You have five days from the invitation email to complete all six stations, until midnight on the last day; a reminder comes 24 hours before. Extensions only in exceptional circumstances.
In detail
A recorded online MMI (vMMI), on Shortlister. Each of six stations shows a question on screen and reads it aloud; you have 30 seconds to think and up to five minutes to answer, about 40 minutes in all. You can take breaks between stations, but an answer cannot be re-recorded once submitted. Make notes with pen and paper: typing may be flagged as possible AI use. The invitation links to a practice area that is never assessed.
Who interviews
Your recording is reviewed later by one of the medical school's interview assessors.
Good to know
Recorded online (asynchronous); offers go by total vMMI score against a cut-off set each year.

Interviews and offers

Brunel has not published how many it interviews and makes offers to.

Without the counts there is no share to work out; what decides offers is below.

What it looks for

Each station assesses a different attribute from the GMC's Good Medical Practice. Brunel wants your own voice: your motivation, values and reasons for medicine, not rehearsed answers.

Your personal statement

Read with the application

Reviewed with the reference at the first check, against set criteria, its admissions policy says; its FOI response says statements are not assessed. Either way the UCAT ranking decides the interview.

Your SJT band

It does not count at the interview. Band 4 is not accepted. Bands 1 to 3 are treated alike: Home applicants are ranked on the UCAT total.

Questions to practise

Written by MedOffr in the style of MMI stations. None is taken from Brunel or claimed to have been asked there.

  1. 01 · Motivation

Why medicine, rather than nursing, pharmacy or becoming a physician associate?

  2. 02 · Ethics

A 15-year-old asks a GP for contraception and does not want her parents told. What should the GP weigh up?

  3. 03 · Role play

You borrowed a friend's laptop and it has stopped working. The actor is your friend: tell them.

  4. 04 · Data

This table shows A&E waiting times at two hospitals over a year. What can and can't you conclude from it?

  5. 05 · Teamwork

Tell us about a time a group you were part of was not working well. What did you do, and what would you change?

  6. 06 · Work experience

What did you see on your work experience that surprised you about a doctor's job?

  7. 07 · The NHS

What is one pressure on the NHS at the moment, and what would you do about it?
