Keele Medicine: the admissions numbers

Keele is the school where the personal statement matters most: after a UCAT floor of 1,700 and SJT Band 1 to 3, Home applicants are ranked on a 25-point score in which the statement is worth 15 and the UCAT at most 7. The 2025 threshold was 15 out of 25. For 2025 entry about 700 of 1,680 Home applicants were interviewed and about 370 got an offer for 166 places. Offer A*AA, MMI.

How Keele selects

Phase 1: the UCAT and academic screen

A total UCAT below 1,700, or an SJT Band 4, is not considered. Everyone else is checked against the academic requirements, which must be met before applying.

Phase 2: the 25-point shortlisting score

Home applicants are ranked on a score out of 25: the UCAT grade (quintile of the total, 5 points for the top 20% down to 1, plus 2 points for SJT Band 1 or 1 for Band 2) and the personal statement scored 0 to 15 against Keele's person specification, plus a point each for a UCAT bursary, meeting the contextual-offer criteria, and attending a school in the Keele region. The threshold is set each year to fill the interviews; in 2025 it was 15 out of 25, and applicants on 14 were also invited if their verbal reasoning was 600 or more.

The personal statement, scored out of 15

Scored 0 to 15, the largest single part of the shortlisting score. Markers credit only content that evidences the five criteria in the person specification: understanding a doctor's roles, awareness of what a medical student must learn, a skill from your studies, engaging with people from different backgrounds, and balancing commitments over time. Shadowing earns nothing beyond criterion one; overseas 'work experience tourism' is marked down.

International applicants

International applicants are ranked on the UCAT total alone; below 1,950 or SJT Band 4 is not considered, and the threshold can be higher than 1,950.

Entry requirements

GCSEs: Five GCSEs at 7/A, and at least 6/B in English Language, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics (or combined science 6/6). Biology and Chemistry without Physics is not accepted. All must be complete before applying. A-levels: A*AA, or AAA with an A in the EPQ. Predicted grades are not used at any point.

Phase 3: interview

About 3.5 to 4 interviews per place; the offer decision is on interview performance, with the UCAT as a tie-breaker where interview scores tie.

To reach the 2025 line of 15 with a 2nd-quintile UCAT and SJT Band 2 (5 points) the statement had to score 10 of 15 with no contextual points; with a 4th-quintile UCAT and Band 3 (2 points) it had to score 13. Keele’s markers credit only content that evidences the five criteria; shadowing, overseas placements and describing a paid job’s ordinary duties earn nothing.

Home applications halved between 2022 and 2024 and recovered for 2025; interviews have stayed at 550 to 720, so the interview rate has ranged from 35% to 72%. Offers per interview have risen every year to about half. For 2026 entry Keele has up to 171 places, up to 10 international.
