Kent and Medway Medicine: how it selects

KMMS does selection differently. The UCAT is a threshold, not a ranking: last cycle the 47th centile with SJT Band 3 or better. Above it, your achieved grades are compared with your own school’s average, and that relative attainment decides the shortlist. Predicted grades are never used, and the offer is AAA or AAB depending on your school. It has released no admissions statistics beyond two competition ratios, so this page sets out its rules.

Offers, contextual offers and resits

A-level offer, 2027 entry

AAA

Chemistry and/or Biology; without both, one of Physics, Maths, Psychology or Computer Science

Contextual offer

AAB

Where your school's average A-level results are lower; KMMS makes no offer below AAB.

Resits

Only with extenuating circumstances

KMMS does not accept A-level resits except through its extenuating circumstances process, used where something affected the first sitting; submitting one does not guarantee acceptance. GCSE resits count towards the minimums if the results are in before you apply.

Compare every school’s resit policy

From Kent and Medway (KMMS)’s own admissions pages for 2027 entry, checked 1 October 2026. Where a box says not stated, the school’s pages do not mention it.

How KMMS selects

1. Minimum requirements, applied strictly

GCSEs (and A-levels, if done) against the minimums. Variations only through the extenuating circumstances process.

2a. The UCAT threshold

Last cycle the 47th centile and SJT Band 3 or better, which KMMS calls generous. Below it, the application stops.

2b. Your grades against your school's

Your achieved grades replaced by how they compare with your school’s average. KMMS says this predicts later performance better and has widened participation. Applicants with no usable school data are scored instead, and may sit an online test.

3 and 4. MMI, then offers in batches

Offers go out from January to May, in batches; KMMS asks you to reply quickly so the next batch can be made.

The UCAT threshold, on today's scale

KMMS's quoted figure, the centile it names, and where that centile sits on the final decile boundaries, out of 2,700. The last row is our conversion.

WhatFigure
As quoted, old scale /3,6002,490
Centile named47th
SJT band3 or better
47th centile, 2026 decilesabout 1,900

The 47th centile sits between the 4th and 5th decile boundaries (1,850 and 1,920), so a score a little under halfway up the scale clears it. The finder reads a total under about 1,900 as a real risk here and anything above as clearing the UCAT stage.

Which route you are on

KMMS sorts every applicant into one of five groups, each with its own minimums and second stage.

Group A

Still at school, sitting A-levels or the IB for the first time, with GCSEs from an English school that publishes data.

Stage 1: Minimum GCSEs. Stage 2: UCAT threshold, then GCSEs against your school's average.

Group B

A-levels or the IB already done (a gap year), or in the final year of a relevant degree.

Stage 1: Minimum GCSEs and A-levels. Stage 2: UCAT threshold (may differ from group A), then A-levels against your school's average.

Group C

No usable school data: home-educated, Scottish and some Northern Irish schools, international qualifications, Access to Medicine.

Stage 1: Minimum entry requirements. Stage 2: UCAT threshold, then scoring, which may include an online assessment (Casper in 2026-27).

Group D

Graduates with a 2:1 in a relevant subject.

Stage 1: Minimum degree requirements. Stage 2: UCAT threshold (may differ), then scoring of the UCAT, the SJT, the degree and evidence favouring NHS service in Kent.

Group E

International applicants with overseas fee status.

Stage 1: Minimum entry requirements. Stage 2: UCAT threshold, then scoring, which may include an online assessment.

How competitive it is

The only figures KMMS has published, through the Medical Schools Council. The cycle they cover is not stated.

Home applicants per place

18.1

International: 19.5

Home applicants per interview

4.1

About 1 in 4 interviewed; international 4.6

The interview

Previously 6 stations of 7 minutes with 3-minute gaps (data handling, problem analysis, situational judgement, role play, task, values-based), then a 40-minute group station in which each applicant is assessed individually, all in person. KMMS warns that coaching for other schools’ MMIs has sometimes been a disadvantage here, and every interviewee signs a non-disclosure agreement. It does not commit to the same stations again.

KMMS's rules, in full

A-levels
AAA: Chemistry and/or Biology; without both, one of Physics, Maths, Psychology or Computer Science. AAA or AAB, set by your school's average A-level results; AAB if you have already finished your A-levels. Three A-levels in one sitting within two years; no predicted grades are used at any point. You must be 18 by the first clinical placement, usually early November.
GCSEs
Five GCSEs at 6, including English Language, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics (or Double Science and one other subject). GCSE resits count if the results are in before you apply.
UCAT
A threshold, not a ranking: last cycle a total at the 47th centile (KMMS quotes it as 2,490, which is on the old 3,600 scale) and SJT Band 3 or better. On the final 2026 deciles the 47th centile is about 1,900. Above it, the UCAT stops counting and your grades against your school's average decide the shortlist.
SJT band
Band 3 or better was part of last cycle's threshold, so Band 4 is not considered; above the threshold the band plays no further part.
Personal statement
Tie-breaker only. Read, with the reference, for borderline applicants at every stage, and only positively: to find achievements or circumstances that would move you up.
Interview
MMI, six stations and a group station. Previously six 7-minute stations (data handling, problem analysis, situational judgement, role play, a task, values) and a 40-minute group station, in person. Applicants sign a non-disclosure agreement.
Contextual applicants
KMMS contextualises everyone: your achieved GCSEs (or A-levels, if you have them) are compared with your school's average, and that relative attainment shortlists you, not the grades themselves. Your offer is AAA or AAB depending on your school's average A-level results. It uses no postcode, free school meals or other self-reported criteria, and makes no offer below AAB.
Resits
Only with extenuating circumstances. KMMS does not accept A-level resits except through its extenuating circumstances process, used where something affected the first sitting; submitting one does not guarantee acceptance. GCSE resits count towards the minimums if the results are in before you apply.

Where this comes from

  • Kent and Medway Medical School's Entry Requirements 2027 page (kmms.ac.uk/entry-requirements-2027): the five groups, the minimums, the UCAT threshold, contextualisation, the MMI and offers.
  • The Medical Schools Council's course page for KMMS A100: subject requirements, the personal statement, resits and the competition ratios.
  • The final 2026 UCAT decile boundaries, for the conversion of the 47th centile.
