Lancashire Medicine: how it selects
The University of Lancashire, formerly UCLan, has only a very limited number of medicine places for UK students. To choose who is interviewed it scores your academics, your personal statement and your reference, and uses your UCAT; offers then go on the interview alone. It has released no admissions statistics, so this page sets out its rules. Offer AAA with Chemistry and a second science, in one sitting.
Offers, contextual offers and resits
A-level offer, 2027 entry

At least two sciences, one of them Chemistry, all in one sitting
Contextual offer

Resits
Accepts resits
Lancashire tells the Medical Schools Council that all resit exams must be taken in the same academic year and only one resit attempt is accepted for the same A-level subject. Its course page also asks for all A-levels in one sitting, so ask admissions before you plan a resit.
From Lancashire (formerly UCLan)’s own admissions pages for 2027 entry, checked 1 October 2026. Where a box says not stated, the school’s pages do not mention it.

The personal statement
Lancashire treats it like a job application and scores it, as well as the quality of the writing.
- Its three questions include what you have done outside education to prepare, and why it is useful: Lancashire calls this one of the most important sections.
- It wants evidence of what you did and the qualities you showed, such as caring experience, teamwork and communication.
- Tell it about exceptional circumstances or difficulties you have overcome, ideally backed up by your referee.
- Careless spelling, grammar and punctuation can cost marks.
- A-levels
- AAA: At least two sciences, one of them Chemistry, all in one sitting. Lancashire says it has only a very limited number of places for UK students; the course is also open to international applicants. It does not say whether Maths counts as a science.
- GCSEs
- Maths and English at grade 5 (B).
- UCAT
- UK applicants' UCAT is used, with an academic score, the personal statement and the reference, to decide who is interviewed. The threshold is set from each year's applicants and is not known in advance.
- SJT band
- Lancashire has not published any use of the SJT band in deciding who is interviewed.
- Personal statement
- Scored at shortlisting. Scored, with the reference, to decide who is interviewed. It answers three questions, including what you have done outside education and why it matters.
- Interview
- MMI, in person or online. Interviewees fill in a transferable skills form about their work experience, which is discussed at interview. Offers are made on interview performance alone.
- Contextual applicants
- Care leavers and applicants from postcodes that meet Lancashire's indicator get a contextual offer of AAB, and applicants who meet its widening participation criteria are given extra weighting in selection.
- Resits
- Accepts resits. Lancashire tells the Medical Schools Council that all resit exams must be taken in the same academic year and only one resit attempt is accepted for the same A-level subject. Its course page also asks for all A-levels in one sitting, so ask admissions before you plan a resit.
