Leeds Medicine: the admissions numbers

Leeds ranks on a combined GCSE, A-level, UCAT and contextual score and publishes the lowest UCAT it shortlisted each year as a guide: 1,900 for UK applicants for 2026 entry (1,810 for widening participation, 2,020 international). An FOI adds five years of applications, interviews and offers against a target of 259 Home and 19 international places: in 2024, 742 of 2,117 Home applicants were interviewed and 300 got an offer. Read this before you use any number on the page

The lowest scores shortlisted are a guide, not a cut-off: academics and UCAT form one total, so a high academic score can compensate for a lower UCAT and the reverse. 2024 and 2025 entry are on the old scale out of 3,600; 2026 entry is on the current scale out of 2,700. Leeds has refused FOI requests for how many points a grade or a UCAT score earns, and does not publish how the SJT band feeds in.
Places are the Office for Students target intake, not the number enrolled; 2020 and 2021 were raised for the pandemic grading years.
The Home / international split of applications depends on fee status, which is never settled for applicants who do not reach shortlisting, so treat the international application counts as approximate.
From 2024 entry both Chemistry and Biology are required at A level; before that it was one of them with Physics or Mathematics if Chemistry was not taken.

How Leeds selects

A combined score, ranked against the year's cohort

Applications that pass the administrative screen are scored on four parts and ranked: the top eight GCSE grades (which must include the required subjects), the top three predicted or achieved Level 3 grades, the total UCAT cognitive score, and contextual criteria. There is no pre-determined UCAT cut-off: applicants are ranked against each year's cohort on the combined score, and a high academic score can compensate for a lower UCAT, and vice versa. Leeds publishes the lowest score shortlisted each year as a guide only.

Contextual points

Extra shortlisting points are added automatically for living in a low-participation area (POLAR4), receiving the UCAT bursary, attending a school below the national average Attainment 8 score, or completing the Leeds Futures: Medicine or Reach for Excellence programmes.

What Leeds will not say

Leeds has refused Freedom of Information requests for the point values (what an A* or a given UCAT score earns) and does not publish how the SJT band feeds into the pre-interview total.

Minimum requirements and the statement

AAA including Chemistry and Biology, and at least six GCSEs at grade 6 or above including English Language, Mathematics and the sciences. Generally not numerically scored, but it must show clear commitment, motivation and a realistic understanding of a career in medicine.

1,900 is low for a school that interviews a third of its applicants: it is the floor the combined ranking reached, set by someone whose GCSEs and predictions carried a modest UCAT. Widening participation applicants were shortlisted from 90 lower.

Leeds interviews about a third of Home applicants and makes offers to roughly 40% of those interviewed, so both stages cut hard. Offers track the 259 Home target closely, and international offers are a handful for 19 places.
