Newcastle Medicine: the admissions numbers

Since 2025 entry Newcastle scores every Home applicant out of 100: up to 40 for the best eight GCSEs and up to 60 for the UCAT. The interview line for 2025 entry was 50 of 100 in both the standard and contextual streams. 610 of 757 Core applicants were interviewed and 466 got an offer; PARTNERS applicants ran 486 / 288 / 176. Offer AAA, MMI.

Read this before you use any number on the page

Up to 2024 entry Newcastle shortlisted on the UCAT alone, so each year’s threshold is a UCAT total on the old scale out of 3,600. For 2025 entry it changed the system: the UCAT became worth up to 60 points and the best eight GCSEs up to 40, and applicants were ranked on the total out of 100. That is why the 2025 threshold is a points score, 50 of 100, not a UCAT. Newcastle says the two systems are not comparable.
Two sets of “lowest” figures exist for 2025 and they differ. Newcastle’s slides give the line as 50 of 100. Its FOI response gives the lowest scores actually recorded among those interviewed: 43 overall with 7 UCAT points for a non-contextual applicant, and 41 overall with 5 UCAT points for a contextual one. Those are below 50 because the admissions team can waive the line at its discretion, and Newcastle advises not to treat them as thresholds. Plan on 50.

Standard (Core) and contextual (PARTNERS, Realising Opportunities, Newcastle’s own criteria) applicants are ranked in separate streams with separate lines, so a Core score is not comparable with a PARTNERS one.
Two application counts exist for the same year and both are right. Newcastle’s chart counts every A100 applicant, Home and international, in every route: 2,435 in 2021. The FOI table counts only Home applicants in the Core and PARTNERS streams: 1,281 + 331 = 1,612 that year. The gap is international and other-route applicants.

The final score is the academic screen score and the interview score weighted 50:50; offers go to the highest ranked. A Situational Judgement Test Band 4 is not considered. At interview the band counts as one MMI station: Band 1 scores 5, Band 2 scores 3, Band 3 scores 1. Applicants who already hold A levels are scored on those instead (A* 16, A 12, B 8, best three, capped at 40).

Two streams

Standard and contextual (including PARTNERS and Realising Opportunities) applicants are ranked as separate streams and may have lower screen and offer thresholds. International applicants are ranked on UCAT alone once the academic screen is passed.

Offers and subjects

AAA for standard entry; ABB for contextual applicants and the supported entry routes. A levels must include Biology or Chemistry plus one of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Statistics or Physics, with a pass in the practical element of any science. Assessed as part of the application; interviewers do not see it.

Interview thresholds, 2021 to 2025 entry

From Newcastle’s slides. For 2021 to 2024 entry the line is a UCAT total out of 3,600, because Newcastle shortlisted on the UCAT alone. For 2025 entry it is 50 of 100 points, because Newcastle switched to scoring the UCAT (up to 60) and the best eight GCSEs (up to 40) together; 50 was simply where that ranking stopped. International applicants are still ranked on UCAT alone, so their column stays a UCAT total.

What the 2025 line means in grades and scores: to reach 50 of 100, eight GCSEs at 8 (32 points) needed a UCAT of 1,980; eight 7s (24 points) needed 2,060; four 7s and four 6s (16 points, the lowest GCSE profile interviewed) needed 2,140. The line is the floor, not the norm: the mean Core interviewee scored 82, which with eight 8s is a UCAT of about 2,300.

The 2024 Core and contextual lines fell to 2,490, near the national average, when applications dropped. The FOI puts the average 2025 interviewee at 41.11 UCAT points and 77.29 overall. The lowest scores it recorded among those interviewed were 43 overall (7 UCAT points) for a non-contextual applicant and 41 overall (5 UCAT points) for a contextual one, both below the 50 line because of discretionary waivers; Newcastle advises against reading them as thresholds.

Newcastle interviews a large share of Core applicants (81% in 2025) and makes offers to 76% of those it interviews, so once you are over the screen line the interview decides. PARTNERS applicants are interviewed at a lower rate and converted at a lower rate, because they compete within their own stream.
