Sheffield Medicine: the admissions numbers

Sheffield sets a UCAT minimum in advance (1,800 for 2027 entry), then ranks everyone above it by UCAT and interviews the top, and it publishes where that ranking stopped each year: 2,120 for Home applicants for 2026 entry. An FOI adds three years of the funnel: in 2025, 1,235 of 2,262 applicants were interviewed and 801 got an offer for 291 places. Offer AAA, MMI, eight stations scored out of 5.

Read this before you use any number on the page

Every UCAT figure in the FOI table is on the old scale out of 3,600. The 1,800 minimum is on the current scale out of 2,700. Do not compare the two.
Two different numbers describe who got an interview, and they are not in conflict. The minimum threshold (1,800 for 2027 entry; 2,430 to 2,440 on the old scale) is the floor every applicant must clear to be considered at all. The ranking cutpoint (2,120 for 2026 entry; 2,760 on the old scale for 2025 entry) is the score the UCAT ranking reached when the interview places ran out. A standard applicant needed the cutpoint. Only applicants on the Access to Sheffield programme or a Bradford or Sheffield Hallam pathway are interviewed from the minimum without being ranked, and they are why the FOI’s “lowest UCAT interviewed” (2,430 in 2025) sits at the minimum rather than at the 2,760 cutpoint.
The FOI gives the whole intake with no Home / international or contextual split. The cutpoint table is Sheffield’s own and ranks Home and overseas applicants separately.
In 2024 and 2025 the lowest UCAT offered equalled the lowest interviewed: once interviewed, the UCAT total no longer decided. Only the SJT is looked at again, as part of the interview score.

How Sheffield selects

A published minimum: 1,800 for 2027 entry

Sheffield sets a minimum UCAT threshold each year and states it in advance. Everyone who meets the minimum is ranked by UCAT total and only the highest scores are invited to interview.

Pathway applicants go straight to interview

Applicants from the Access to Sheffield (Medicine) programme, or a recognised University of Bradford or Sheffield Hallam pathway, go straight to interview if they meet the UCAT minimum. Everyone else has to reach the ranking cutpoint, which sits well above the minimum: 2,120 against 1,800 for 2026 entry.

The SJT counts at interview, not before

The SJT is looked at only once you are invited to interview, where the quartile becomes a score out of 5 added to the MMI total.

Personal statement

Not normally read or scored. The activities and values in it are commonly explored at interview, and it is read only if UCAS flags possible plagiarism, which would end the application.

A levels

AAA including Chemistry or Biology and a second science, with a pass in the practical element of any science A level. Alternative offer: AAB including Chemistry or Biology at A and a second science, plus an A in the EPQ taken in the same sitting, for applicants who make Sheffield their firm choice.

GCSEs

At least five GCSEs at grade 7, and grade 6 or above in Mathematics, English Language and at least one science (dual award counts). The five 7s may include those subjects.

How the interview is scored, out of 45

Eight MMI stations each scored out of 5 (5 excellent, 4 good, 3 satisfactory, 2 borderline, 1 unsatisfactory) plus the SJT score, for a total out of 45. Applicants scoring 3 or better on every station and the SJT are prioritised in the ranking; offers follow the ranking.

The Home cutpoint has sat 300 to 420 above the minimum in every cycle but 2023-24, when applications fell and the ranking reached the floor. For 2026 entry the gap was 320: a 2,120 was needed for a Home interview, not 1,800. The 2027 minimum stays at 1,800; the cutpoint will be wherever next year’s ranking stops.

Offers start higher than interviews in every year but one: 2024, when the lowest offer matched the lowest interview exactly. That was the year applications fell by a third.

Sheffield interviews around half its applicants and makes offers to about two-thirds of those it interviews, for 291 places. The “lowest UCAT interviewed” of 2,430 to 2,440 is the minimum threshold, reached only by pathway applicants who skip the ranking; a standard applicant in 2025 needed the 2,760 cutpoint in the table above, and the average interviewee had about 2,800.
