St Andrews Medicine: the admissions numbers

St Andrews checks the application as a set of hurdles, then ranks everyone who clears them on the UCAT total and interviews about 650. It publishes the minimum UCAT that reached interview: for 2026 entry, on the current test, 1,640 for rest-of-UK applicants, 1,500 for Scottish-funded and 1,710 for overseas. Rest-of-UK applicants are the smaller and more competitive pool: 162 of 456 interviewed in 2024-25. Offer AAA, MMI.

Read the row for your route. Scottish-funded, rest-of-UK and overseas applicants are ranked separately, so their minimums differ: for 2026 entry a Scottish applicant reached interview from 1,500 and a rest-of-UK applicant from 1,640. An English, Welsh or Northern Irish applicant should use the rest-of-UK figures throughout.
The 2026 minimums are on the current scale out of 2,700; the yearly tables are on the old scale out of 3,600 and end at 2024-25. St Andrews says it cannot predict the coming year’s cut-off.
The minimum is the lowest score that made the top 650 or so, after a 10% uplift for widening-participation applicants; a non-WP applicant at exactly the minimum may have been in the room only because of that uplift.
The application is a hurdle first: a strong academic record, a positive reference and medically related work experience are required before the UCAT ranking is applied. The SJT band is not used.

How St Andrews selects

Hurdles, then a UCAT ranking

Applications are not scored or weighted. Every part is checked as a hurdle: a strong academic record, a positive reference and relevant, medically related work experience. Everyone who clears the hurdles is ranked on the UCAT total and the top 650 or so are interviewed.

Three routes, ranked separately

Home (Scottish-funded), rest-of-UK and overseas applicants are ranked separately, which is why their minimums differ.

Widening participation

Widening-participation applicants who meet, or are predicted to meet, the grades and satisfy one of the criteria get a 10% uplift to their UCAT for the interview ranking.

Offers

Offers are decided on the interview score and the route applied for; where interview scores tie, the UCAT total separates them.

SJT and personal statement

The SJT band is not looked at. Read with the reference as part of the hurdle, but not scored or weighted in the ranking.

Entry requirements

A-levels: AAA including Chemistry and one of Biology, Maths or Physics; the minimum considered is AAB with the same subjects. GCSEs: At least five GCSEs at 7/A taken at one sitting, in addition to the subject requirements; applicants with achieved A-levels may be considered with fewer.

The two pools differ by about 400 UCAT points at the bottom and 300 at the average: in 2024-25 the rest-of-UK minimum was 2,770 against 2,390 for Scottish applicants, and the rest-of-UK average 2,981 against 2,698. Rest-of-UK applicants were interviewed at 36% against 69%, for about 64 entrants a year. The rest-of-UK minimum rose from 2,400 to 2,770 over the five years, with one dip, so the 2026 line on the new scale (1,640) is the floor of a rising trend rather than a resting place.
