Sunderland uses the UCAT as a threshold only: the total must be in the top eight deciles of the year’s cohort with SJT Band 1 to 3, and then a 14-point selection tool (three questions and your work experience) ranks for interview. For 2026 entry 720 of 1,098 Home applicants were interviewed and 451 got an offer; for 2025 the lowest interviewee had 2,260 on the old scale. Offer AAA, MMI.

The threshold is the top eight deciles: on the preliminary 2026 boundaries that is above 1,750. Sunderland’s own adjusted minimums for 2020 to 2024 (Abstract Reasoning removed) were 1,650 to 1,690, so it has sat near the 2nd/3rd decile line every year. It moves with the national deciles, not with Sunderland’s applicants.
The lowest and average UCAT of interviewees for 2023 to 2025 entry are on the old scale out of 3,600 and, because the UCAT does not rank, they describe who applied more than who was chosen.
The personal statement is not read; predicted grades are not used; the numeracy test is gone. GCSEs must simply meet the requirements.

The UCAT is a threshold, not a ranking: the total must be in the top eight deciles of that year's cohort and the SJT in Band 1 to 3. Band 4 is rejected; Bands 1 to 3 are treated alike. Sunderland does not weight the UCAT, GCSEs or predicted grades against each other.

The interview selection tool, out of 14

Applicants who clear the thresholds are ranked on an interview selection tool: three questions each scored out of 3, plus total work-experience time and duration out of 5, a maximum of 14. The highest scores are interviewed.

Numeracy test and personal statement

The 40-minute numeracy test used in earlier cycles has been removed. Not read or assessed at any stage.

Offers

Offers follow the post-interview ranking. Ties on MMI score are separated by the UCAT, local or contextual credentials and station performance.

A-levels

AAA including Biology or Chemistry, another designated science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Further Maths or Statistics) and a third academic subject. Predicted grades are not used; achieved grades must meet the requirements.

GCSEs

Five GCSEs at 7/A with at least 6/B in Maths, English Language, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. GCSE resits are allowed.

Interviews jumped from under 480 to over 700 for 2025 entry and offers have risen every year, to 63% of interviews for 2026. The lowest interviewed sat at 2,260 to 2,280 on the old scale in every year with the contextual line no lower, consistent with a threshold that is the same for everyone.
